Oil Palm Contract Farming in Brazil: Labour Constraints and Inclusivity Challenges

The Government of Brazil established their Sustainable Palm Oil Production Programme (SPOPP) in 2010, which sought to enhance the sustainability and inclusiveness oil palm development Amazon. This paper evaluates how well contract farming promoted by SPOPP has delivered on its inclusive objectives. Drawing cross-section data collected Northeast Pará, it analyses two recurrent themes, namely (1) equitable participation (2) labour allocation plantation management. Our analysis demonstrates that household availability land resources strongly shapes patterns inclusion exclusion. Moreover, findings reveal time is influenced hiring external labourers, increases when households are poor. These results give reason question utility labour-oriented eligibility criteria, revealing important business value chain dilemmas.
